When Is A Booster Pump Needed?

Pressure boosting systems are used in properties and applications where water pressure is low.  In addition booster pumps are beneficial to systems where a single pump cannot deliver the desired pressure.

The most common domestic application for a booster pump is to pressurise the water that comes from the storage tank.  A water booster pump boosts water pressure throughout your property to improve water delivery too all water fixtures. Booster pumps are typically installed where water needs to move from a low to high level. For example, to supply water to the second or third floor of a domestic property. Mains water booster pumps are also used in multi story buildings and commercial irrigation systems. At Alton Pump Services we provide reliable, durable booster pumps for a variety of purposes.  Our skilled engineers work with you to recommend the best pump for your needs.

A booster pump is used when:

  1. Buildings where water has to travel to upper floors, gravity may slow your water flow.
  2. Low water pressure supply from mains.
  3. Water treatment systems – if you have installed additional water treatment systems, this may decrease your water flow.

What causes low water pressure?

Low water pressure causes problems for water supply in both domestic and commercial properties.  However it is important to identify the cause of low water pressure before installing a new system. A qualified engineer will be able to diagnose if the issue is due to low pressure or alternatively it could be a blockage, leak or the effects of undersized piping.  Contact Alton Pump Services to book an engineer to identify and rectify your water pressure issues.

The main causes of low water pressure include:

  • Gravity
  • Distance from the water source
  • Poor water supply
  • Small water mains
  • Multiple water treatment systems or water fixtures using the water supply.
  • Leaking pipework
  • Trapped air in your pipework

Booster Pump Supply

To ensure longevity of any pump system it is vital that the appropriate equipment is specified. Once the cause of low water pressure has been identified our engineers will advise on the appropriate booster pump for your application.  The following factors should be assessed to select the appropriate pump:

  • Water flow rate: Calculate the current volume of water per minute.
  • Volume of water required: Estimate the volume of water your property or business uses.
  • Location of water source: Identify the location of your water source – will it travel uphill or up stories within the building?.
  • Desired water pressure: Whilst high water is desirable in some situations, extreme pressure can damage plumbing, fittings, and appliances.

With access to a wide range of manufacturers, our supply base enables us to provide you with the biggest names in inline booster pumps. Get in touch with Alton Pump Services to discuss your requirements.

Booster Pump Commissioning

We offer a commissioning service for new water booster pump installations.  Firstly, our pump engineers check and inspect the installation of the pump to ensure it has been installed as per drawings.  Secondly, verification for compliance to the manufacturers instructions is also reviewed along with the installation certificate.  Next, our engineers would check there is no excess vibration, record speeds and pressure, check the float switch and test for faults. Finally, before the pump is fully commissioned, we check that there is adequate clearance for service and maintenance engineers.

How Do Booster Pumps Work?

A booster pump has an impeller inside that forces water to flow at a faster rate through plumbing pipes. Using a motor the booster pump draws water into the inlet (break tank).  As the water enters the chamber the pump activates the impellers.  The impellers spin at a rapid rate, accordingly boosting the water pressure before it is thrust water through the outlet of the pump.
