Dewatering Pumps

Hire, Supply, Installation & Servicing

Alton Pump Services offer a range of dewatering pumps. Our professional, reliable team supply, install service and repair dewatering pumps.

Groundwater can cause significant problems when excavating for construction below ground level. Dewatering pumps are often used on construction sites prior to and during the construction process to lower the groundwater level. This type of pump is usally diesel driven. Our range of dewatering pumps are robust in design to meet tough challenges in the construction and mining industries. We also supply and service domestic dewatering pumps for cellars and basements.

At Alton Pump Services, we take pride in our ability to offer whatever kind of dewatering or industrial pump you may need for your specific project. Call our team today on 01420 561661 to discuss your dewatering pump requirements.

What Are Dewatering Pumps Used For

Submersible dewatering pumps are deisgned to move groundwater water from low lying areas in industrial and domestic environments; from construction sites before a building’s foundation is built to water removal from your basement. In most cases dewatering pumps require minimal maintenance. Dewatering pumps use centrifugal force to reduce water levels.

What to Consider When Choosing A Dewatering Pump

It is important to choose the right dewatering pump for your application. An incorrectly sized pump can cause issues further down the line including broken shafts, dislodged seal or impellers.

Issue to consider are:

  • Distance required to pump
  • Elevation required to pump
  • Materials being pumped

Dewatering pumps have a minimum Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) requirement to ensure continuous flow, this dependant on the operating duty point – the net positive suction head available should be compared to the net positive suction head required to select a dewatering pump. The NPSH is effected by a number of variants: length of the suction pipeline, pump elevation above sea level, temperature, gravity.

The materials being pump should be identified – pumping clear liquids will require less energy and inflict less wear than pumping slurry.

Due to their portability construction sites will often used electric submersible pumps for dewatering because they are small and lightweight and have a quick setup time.

Which Dewatering Method Should You Choose?

Wellpoints

The wellpoint method uses closley spaced wells that are installed around the area. The wellpoints are connected to a headerpipe are often used for pipeline trench excavations. Electric submersible pumps near the base of each well have the combined capacity to lower the groundwater level over a wide area beneath the excavation.

Water collection pipes, power supply generators, electrical controls and monitoring systems are located at surface level.

Sump Pumps

In shallow excavation sites a sump pump is frequently the appropriate dewatering method. Groundwater accumulates in a sump basin or pit via drains or by natural water seepage through the soil. From the pit the water is pumped away; this method is frequently used I for ground water removal in cellars and basements.

Deepwells

Deepwells are bored around the perimeter of the area to be excavated. Using hermetically sealed submersible pumps this method is suited to deep excavations and lower the groundwater level below the excavation area.
