How Do Macerator Pumps Work?

Wet waste from toilets, sinks and washing machines flows through the pipes into the macerator pump’s holding tank. When waste inside the tank reaches a specific level, the pump turns on, then grinds the waste into a fine slurry, and pumps it to the sewer system.  The macerator pump uses uses a stainless steel fast-rotating cutting blade to chop up the solids to reduce them to a near-liquid. Once the slurry is ground up it can be pumped against gravity.  When the water level in the macerator unit goes down, the switch deactivates the macerator is activated again on the next flush.

Where Are Macerator Pumps Used?

A macerator pump enables you to install a toilet almost anywhere. They are ideal for difficult sites that are prone to clogging and require pressure for pumping vertically through a discharge line.  Macerator Pumps are connected to toilets to grind human waste and toilet paper. A macerator pump is used to pump sewage from a building to the sewerage system if building’s plumbing is at a lower grade than the sewer main. They can also be used when there is not enough slope to allow sewage to gravity flow to the system. Installing a macerator pump is typically a cheaper option than extending your existing sewage system. Macerators can be installed with both close-coupled and wall hung toilets.

Where Does Waste Go From A Macerator Toilet?

The macerating pump coverts the solid waste into fluids. The waste passes through the pump instead of moving directly to the outflow pipes. Waste fluids is then discharged under pressure and expelled into the sewage line or septic tank.

What's The Difference Between A Macerator & Grinder Pump?

Macerator pumps differ from grinder pumps in that they require a constant flow of liquid.  Often used in domestic properties, a macerator can be installed without excavation and sits behind the toilet. The pump breaks down solids using a fast-rotating scissor-like action to cut waste such as wet wipes and hair into smaller pieces.  This converts the solids into a fine slurry which is then pumped either uphill or horizontally to the sewage system.

By installing a macerator pump your sewage drains are less likely to become blocked, and as a result allows waste to flow freely. The size of the macerator pump you require will depend on the size of your property and equally important, the number of people using the facilities.  Talk to our team today on 01420 561661 for advice on the most suitable macerator for your property.
